Earth Day!

April 22, 2022/0 Comments/in Blog, General, Sustainability/by Jess Wells-Flint

About Earth Day

Today is Earth Day! The 22nd of April is a very special day here at WestWon, as today we will be celebrating Earth Day. What’s even better is that this year’s theme is ‘Invest in our planet’. It’s calling for businesses to start thinking about their green agenda’s and how they can move towards becoming more climate friendly. Earth Day’s purpose each year is to bring together people from across the world to combat the issues of climate change, pollution, deforestation and a number of other issues that are currently destroying our planet.

The first Earth Day happened in 1970. People took to the streets to protest against the detrimental impacts of industrial development had caused. Not just to the environment, but to the human population too. There will undoubtedly be a huge number of campaigns for today. We hope that along with numerous others, everyone starts to think more about the environment and how we impact it daily. So, make sure to look out today for a number of tips and suggestions on how you can do your part! No matter how small it is, everyone’s collective efforts will help combat the current climate crisis.

WestWon’s green agenda

Here at WestWon, we are proud to say we have upped our game in regards to our green agenda. We have already implemented several green choices in our office, and wish to continue to do so. One example is that we are currently a paperless office and have been for several years now. All our filing systems are online, and any paper that we absolutely must use is recycled. Any paper that we send out additionally is always on recyclable paper.

We have also implemented LED lighting in our office, a much more environmentally friendly lighting option. If you are moving office, thinking about redoing a workplace, or just want to do your bit for the environment, investing in LED lighting is a good place to start. And not only does it help our environment but it is also a considerably cheaper alternative!

Additionally, we have equipped each floor of our offices with recycling bins to encourage all members of staff to recycle whilst they are at work too.

Our biggest achievement to date however is the introduction of the WestWon Woodland. The scheme started properly in January and since then we have managed to plant just under 6,000 trees in our virtual woodland. We have also reduced over 105 tonnes of carbon from the atmosphere. This is a significant amount, and it can only get bigger! We are excited to get the chance to work with our customers, and by planting a tree for every month of a lease agreement we do with you, we can make a huge difference to the world we live in. We even got involved in the tree planting ourselves, you can read more about our marketing team’s tree planting trip here. If you would like more information about the WestWon Woodland, then please click here.

To add to this, we have been proud to call ourselves a climate positive company for 6 months now! This meaning that all of our carbon emissions as a company have been offset within the last 6 months. Check out our badge below!

Climate Positive

Supporting companies in their journey to sustainability

Here at WestWon we make it easier for companies to access environmentally friendly energy sources. We understand that renewable energy sources such as solar panels and wind turbines can be pricey. But we make it affordable for companies to contribute positively to the planet without causing damage to their cash flow.

We offer finance for wind turbines and solar panels. The projects can be financed from start to finish. Therefore, we can provide finance for the initial survey, the commodity itself, delivery and installation costs!

EV finance

Many are now making the shift to Electric Vehicles and us included with 2 of our company cars now being electric! Many are making this shift in efforts to reduce pollution as well as to avoid the ever rising fuel prices. Here at WestWon we offer finance for companies looking to acquire EVs for a healthier atmosphere for us all.

And just like the renewable energy sources mentioned above, you can finance the full package with us! Therefore, you can finance your EV chargers with us too! We are mindful that most of the time, the installation costs can be more costly than the chargers themselves. But not to worry, as we can finance these costs also!

EV Charging Point Finance

April 18, 2022/0 Comments/in Blog, Sustainability/by Jess Wells-Flint

Here at WestWon we are big on sustainability. We recognise how important the future is, and try to do what we can as a leasing company in order to do our bit for the environment. We have already implemented several sustainable initiatives and practices, such as our green scheme the WestWon Woodland and moving to a paperless office over a decade ago. You can find more of these practices by viewing our green agenda blog here. This is why we are excited to announce the introduction of Electric Vehicle Charging Point Finance.

Rising energy prices

With our green agenda in mind (and with fuel prices rising by the day at time of writing), we’ve decided to finance a couple of electric vehicles for ourselves. The rationale was simple, make the most of the advantageous tax benefits for the business. This is all whilst doing our bit towards saving the planet. (By the way we also finance electric vehicles, call us for more information.) However, one thing we were not prepared for was the charging of the vehicles and were surprised to receive multiple quotes higher than we were expecting.

This got us thinking, the move to electric vehicles is inevitable but the cost of implementing the infrastructure is likely to put even the greenest intentioned company off what can be classed as a luxury purchase. Therefore we’re happy to announce we’re now financing Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging Points, with agreements starting from £1,000 + VAT up to a 5 year term.

With well-publicised energy prices currently rising throughout the UK, the popularity of electric vehicles is certainly on the rise. According to a recent study, new EV registrations were 76.3% higher than the year before, from 2020 to 2021. However, with this rise in electric vehicles comes the rise of charging points. These can be hard to find, especially at a cost that’s good for your business. However, even then they are costly, which is why leasing and finance options are the best solution for your business.

More about Electric Vehicles

The Mayor of London currently has in place a strategy to support his ambition for London to become a zero-carbon city by 2030. This is where zero emission capable (ZEC) vehicles come in. They will help the mayor in his plan to reduce the amount of carbon in the atmosphere. This is as well as making the shift towards zero emission technologies. There are three types of ZEC vehicles which can be seen below:

  • Vehicles that are 100% pure electric. These are powered by a battery usually lasting around 80 miles, but that also have no exhaust emissions.
  • Plug-in hybrids. These have a combined battery and diesel or petrol engine. This means that they last a lot longer, but are obviously more harmful to the environment than those above.
  • Hydrogen fuel cell vehicles. These have a much longer range, typically 300 miles, because it uses hydrogen to produce electricity from a fuel cell.

WestWon Woodland update!

March 14, 2022/0 Comments/in Blog, Sustainability/by Jess Wells-Flint

As you may know by now, WestWon’s green scheme of planting trees has been running smoothly for the past 4 months! We are so very proud of how far we have come with this initiative. This includes the impact we have made. Below is an update of the WestWon Woodland initiative (in case you missed it) as well as those all important numbers.

A quick recap

At the end of 2021, we teamed up with Ecologi, a UK based social enterprise. They are a company that helps plant trees in the UK and abroad. It works by us sending them the amount of trees we wish to plant. We then hand over payment them and they essentially do the work for us! Ecologi are an amazing company in the way that they work. They allow us as well as our customers to see the species of tree that has been planted, its age and the project it was funded for (e.g. the place they were planted).

So, how does WestWon contribute, and why should we have you to thank? Well, when you complete a lease agreement with us we will plant a tree for every month of the lease term in the WestWon Woodland. This part of the scheme started at the beginning of the year. We are also sending out certificates to those who have taken part, as well as an extra chance to plant 10 more trees in the woodland if it’s reposted. All these chances are just extra ways that you can help us in staying as a climate positive company. As well as aiding the environment in its battle against climate change.

WestWon Woodland update

Our goals:

  • To plant 100,000 trees in the WestWon Woodland within the next 5 years
  • To reduce 7,500 tonnes from the atmosphere within the next 5 years

Our current numbers:

  • So far, we have planted 5,427 trees in the WestWon Woodland
  • Currently, we have reduced 70.64 tonnes of carbon from the atmosphere

Our tree planting trip!

January 31, 2022/0 Comments/in Blog, Sustainability/by Jess Wells-Flint

As you may already know, in the latter part of 2021 we teamed up with Ecologi, and now we have already been on our first of many tree planting trips! Ecologi are a company dedicated to tackling our current climate crisis. They do this by arranging the planting of an abundance of trees across the world, in an effort to offset the planet’s surging carbon levels. So, through them, we made ourselves a climate positive company. Whilst also putting a scheme in place where we will plant trees through them for each month of a finance agreement made through us.

Protect Earth

So, we thought it would only make sense to offer some helping hands towards this vital cause. Hence, last Thursday, our marketing department took a trip to one of Ecologi’s many tree planting partners- Protect Earth. Protect Earth have several planting locations across England & Wales. On Thursday we visited their reforestation location in Hawling, Cheltenham. Their objective is to plant trees across the UK in efforts to remove carbon from our atmosphere, reduce flood risk and by doing all of this they will inevitably enhance our air quality.

They were founded in 2020, an eye-opening year for us all, especially with regards to our climate crisis. They are a transparent registered charity and every penny donated to them goes towards the restoration of our planet. Protect Earth are solely UK based at present; however, they have ambitions to grow their charity internationally.

What did we do?

So, our marketing team took it upon themselves to volunteer to muck in and actively help plant these trees themselves.  So, with their wellies on, and shovels to hand,  amongst larger group of  13 other volunteers, they planted 500 bare root saplings throughout the day! And these mere twig looking things will eventually flourish into abundant leafy beauties.

saplings

Tree planting process

  • With shovels in hand, our first job was to dig a deep hole. It had to be deep enough for the roots to be placed underground and covered with enough soil.
  • Next was to heel the soil around it into the ground so that the plant couldn’t be ripped up by animals.

planting

  • Then we had to use a mallet to place a stake into the ground next to the plant in order for it to grow straight, and again keep off predators.

  • Then we placed a guard over the top of the stake, which was secured by either zip ties or staples.
  • We then placed a small stick into the ground with the name of the tree. This is arguably the most important step as it allows Protect Earth to show to Ecologi the trees that they have planted.
  • Last but not least, we went round every tree once more and did some mulching. This is a layer of material placed over the soil. This would allow the tree to have the best chance of surviving.

We are extremely excited to see how this scheme will benefit the environment. As of currently we have managed to plant 730 trees and reduce our carbon emissions by 52.98 tonnes. This will continue to rise in the future. With a goal to plant 10,000 trees in the next 5 years, we hope that our contribution makes a difference to the world we live in. If you would like the visit Ecologi’s website and see all the amazing work they do, then click here. Alternatively, you can visit our virtual woodland, or our WestWon Woodland page, which will give you more insight into what the scheme entails.

Cut down on your company’s carbon footprint

December 27, 2021/0 Comments/in Blog, Sustainability/by Jess Wells-Flint

How big is your company carbon footprint?

Carbon footprint is calculated by both direct and indirect sources of emissions. Direct emissions include an individual’s actions over a period of time that contribute to the world’s carbon pollution. Indirect sources of emissions include the carbon dioxide that is released into the atmosphere. This is because of manufacturing, transportation, or fuel extraction. The burning of fossil fuels is the main source of human produced carbon dioxide emissions. This is why energy sourced by renewables is the new and revered approach to powering your facilities.

Where to start?

Firstly, you need to identify your company’s material sources of carbon pollution. These include indirect emission sources. These include the fossil fuels that you use to power your facilities. The burning of fossil fuels is the main source of carbon pollution caused by humans. You may think that this is something that can be caused directly, and so you are not a part of it. However, companies have a large part to play. For example, here at WestWon, our lease deals contribute to the burning of fossil fuels. This includes when completing lease agreements for vehicles that are non-electric. Companies need to start working to amend this. This is also why in the COP26 meeting in November 2021, businesses pledged to do more for the environment. Read more about this on our blog on the COP26 meeting.

How to reduce my carbon footprint?

There are several ways that you can reduce your carbon footprint. These include making small or big changes to aspects of your lifestyle, including food, clothing, transport and energy and waste. You could limit and recycle your waste at work or turn down the heating, even if by just 1 degree. Furthermore, you could take public transport and buy from sustainable clothing brands. You could also limit your meat intake, whilst shopping from local businesses, as well as avoiding products with too much plastic packaging. You can also make larger changes such as installing renewable sources of energy. These include wind turbines and solar panels.

WestWon’s new initiative

WestWon has launched our new initiative, the biggest step we have taken yet to help the environment. It will not only reduce our carbon footprint but help to offset parts of our lease deals. This is a major step in the world of leasing. We hope that you and your company will also make the step to become more sustainable and environmentally friendly. Join us on our journey and take a look at our WestWon Woodland page now.

Deforestation – why is it so harmful?

December 6, 2021/0 Comments/in Blog, Sustainability/by Jess Wells-Flint

What is deforestation?

Deforestation is the process of removing parts of a forest or a large expanse of trees. The forest clearance is then converted to non-forest use land. Either by making it an urbanised area for buildings, or in some cases, making it grazing land for animals such as cows. Both are bad for their own reasons, some of which are covered later in this blog. According to studies, around 31% of the earth’s land surface is covered by forests. It’s imperative that we keep this number the same, if not grow it.

Current news about deforestation

The summit of COP26 is now over.  Here are some of the key outcomes of the conference with regards to deforestation.

The COP26 agreement has been signed by 141 world leaders to stop deforestation by 2030. The pledge led to around £14 billion of private and public funds being promised to help fund the scheme. However, the same pledge was committed to in 2014 and this failed. This is leading many experts to believe that this will end the same way. A portion of the funding will go to developing countries in order to “restore damaged land, tackle wildfires and support indigenous communities” according to a report by the BBC. 28 countries have also pledged to “remove deforestation from the global trade of…agricultural products such as palm oil, soya and cocoa.”

According to ukcop.org, the United Nations state that they are committed to working together to stop and reverse deforestation by 2030. If successful, the restoration of our forests will heavily contribute to the main goal of the conference. That being, to keep the average global temperature increase to well below 2°C- ideally to 1.5°C.

What are the disadvantages?

There are several disadvantages to deforestation. These include larger issues such as carbon dioxide release. This is when the trees that are cut down release all the carbon dioxide they originally stored. It also decreases the amount of oxygen in the atmosphere because there aren’t as many trees available to produce it. Releasing the greenhouse gas such as CO2 can have a damaging impact on the world, as it contributes to global warming. The next disadvantage comes from cutting down the trees to use it for grazing land for animals, like cows. The amount of methane that cows produce is a significant addition to the greenhouse effect. Decreasing the amount of oxygen in the atmosphere and replacing it with methane is a huge negative impact. Other major disadvantages include soil erosion, the destruction of habitats for all wildlife as well as a loss of biological diversity.

What can we do to stop deforestation?

There are several things that we can do as a society and in the workplace to help combat climate change. The first, more obvious way, is to plant more trees. This may seem impossible however there are companies that you can go to to help you do this. Just make sure you do your research first. You can also go paperless. Here at WestWon we have been a paperless office for over a decade, due to our highly advanced CRM system. Other ways to stop deforestation include recycling all products where possible and buying from companies who commit to reduce deforestation. As well as not buying certain harmful products such as palm oil and raising awareness in your community. Also installing LED lights (like we have) can make a significant impact.

WestWon’s new initiative

Here at WestWon we are planning on launching our new initiative on the 15th of December 2021. We will be releasing more information closer to the time. However, we are excited to start our journey and become a positive climate workforce. In the mean time, you can contact us if you would like any further information.

COP26 – what does it mean for UK firms?

November 8, 2021/0 Comments/in Blog, News, Sustainability/by Jess Wells-Flint

Currently, the world is in a major climate crisis. The Earth’s temperature is rising. Studies show that temperatures have risen by 0.08°C per decade since 1880. This may not seem like a lot but the rate of warming over the past 40 years is now more than twice that. This shows a rapid incline of global warming. This is one major reason that the COP26 talks are currently taking place between the 31st of October and the 12th of November. COP26 stands for Conference of the Parties and is attended by all countries who signed the UNFCCC. This is the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. This agreement was agreed upon and signed in 1994, and the 2021 meeting is their 26th, hence why it is called COP26. This blog includes what COP26 means for UK firms and what we are doing about it.

What have they agreed on already?

Already there have been some promising starts to the meeting. These include:

  • World leaders vowing to halt deforestation. This will be done as they have outlined in their plan by conserving “forests and other terrestrial ecosystems and accelerate their restoration.”
  • The US President Joe Biden has pledged to cut methane emissions by 30% by 2030. This was hailed at the meeting as one of “the most immediate opportunities to slow global warming.” Since his pledge, around a further 100 nations have set a target for themselves to also reduce methane emissions by 30% by 2030.
  • Joe Biden has also re-joined the High Ambition Coalition. This has the main aim of achieving the limit of a 1.5°C increase in the world’s temperature.
  • The Glasgow Breakthrough Agenda has also been agreed on by several countries. This aims to coordinate the introduction of clean electricity and electric vehicles among a number of other technologies. It works by rapidly reducing the cost of these.
  • In addition, African countries have also pledged to spend around $6 billion on adapting to climate impacts. They have also been asking other countries to help provide them with $2.5 billion a year for the next 5 years to help them reach their goals.
  • Lastly, several countries, including the UK, have signed a new agreement of $8.5 billion for the Just Energy Transition Partnership with South Africa. This will help reduce the country’s need for using coal, and hopefully enable them to introduce more renewable energy options.

What does COP26 mean for UK firms?

COP26 has also pushed the importance of involving businesses in the goal of becoming net zero by 2025. Boris Johnson has told most large UK firms and financial institutions that they will need to show their plans to move to a low carbon future by 2023. According to a BBC News Article on the COP26 agreement and what it means for UK firms, the commitments aren’t mandatory. This has angered several ‘green groups’ who say this isn’t enough in the long term. UK Chancellor Rishi Sunak has said that he wants and believes the UK will be the “first-ever net zero aligned global financial centre.”

What is WestWon doing about this?

WestWon is committed to helping the environment so that we can do our part in the fight against global warming. We have found the best way to do this, in an efficient and credible manner. We believe it’s by planting trees to reduce the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere. Here at WestWon we will be launching our biggest initiative on the 15th of December 2021. Above all, we cannot wait to start doing our bit for the environment and reduce global warming on Earth.
